Turning Steel

by Colin Dryden - sung by Graham Dodsworth

mp3

I met Colin in Perth December 1972 when I sang at the Governor Broom and The Stable folk clubs, he was living there at the time. Then again in Sydney July 7th 1974, when he was staying at Morgan's Mansions in Balmain and in Melbourne in 1974 when I was doing the bookings for the Outpost Inn, in Collins St. In january 1975 Colin, Stevie Spencer and I began hiking from Nariel Creek Folk Festival in Victoria to Numeralla Folk Festival in New South Wales, Nariel being held at New Year and Numeralla on Australia Day. The hike didn't work out as we had planned but I remember camping out in Kancoban, talking, singing and thinking we saw UFOs over the Snowy Mountains. We were fairly convinced.
Early in 1974 I too worked in a steel factory and although I can't remember the first time I heard Dryden sing this, I had it going through my head the entire time I too was staring at the lathe. It followed that I learned the song to perform. I'm not sure when I resurected the song for peformance but I certainly had it back in the repertoire by the time I recorded 'In Our Time' in 2004.
