Loser's Blues

by Graham Dodsworth

mp3 There are autobiographical aspects to this song but there is also a great deal of poetic license taken for the usual reasons. Written in the mid 1980s in Albury, I've also often referred to it as 'The Albury Crawl' because it describes the practise of locals going out in the evening, especially on weekends, looking for 'the action', where all their friends might be hanging out. Each of them would try a different venue in an unco-ordinated fashion, before we all had mobile phones and then after maybe one drink and 'no sign of said friends' head off to the next venue or pub, missing most of their friends who were possibly rotating from two other locations while attempting same juggling act. At around 10pm when all the hotels closed, they would all generally happily find each other when they wound up at Maudies Wine Bar, 'where I sang' (lucky me). 'All roads lead to Maudies' I used to say.
After midnight when Maudies closed people would either head to one of the two illegal gambling establishments nearby or 'Sweethearts Pizza, directly across the road or Silvers Disco further down Dean Street. The song captures this concept.
