mp3 Who wasn't affected by watching the Tianenman Square saga pan out. I was just mucking around in my studio playing a PC game when the concept shaped itself into words in my mind and thence almost automatically into the stanzas of the song.

Later I was shown an 'eyes only' transcript of an eye witness account which described exactly what I had put into the song - hardly a word has been altered since writing the song with the exception that a week or so later I wrote the final verse to include the oppression in Tibet which I had always appalled me.
