Brunswick Road

by Steve Groves & Danny Burke

mp3 I first heard this song at the Retreat Hotel in Sydney Road Brunswick in the mid 1980s, performed by The Purple Dentists. Steve Groves agreed to allowing me to record him singing the song onto a cassette. I called in with a bottle of puremalt scotch which we both proceeded to drink. I was staying at Ross Ryan's in Melbourne at the time and remember that I had just managed to transcribe the words of the song when the tape broke, but I had it. Groves and Burke kindly allowed me to record the song on my 'In Our Time' CD in 2004.

Lyrics:
Brunswick Road by Steve Groves & Danny Bourke
(as sung by Graham Dodsworth 1987-2014)

1st verse
I know a woman who says she's old,
She weaves a spell around my rented house of stone.
It's late when we leave at the foot of the stairs
The gas pipes ring as she laughs and sings of her dancing years.

Refrain:
And she tells me we should go home down Brunswick Road
where we would walk and we would talk till the moon went down.
We were arm in arm, as in days of old.
We thought the street was lined with gold down Brunswick Road.

2nd verse
We live in the heart of the town she loves.
She doesn't mind I can't recall her dancing days.
Outside the hall, the iron lace.
Her dancing's over now the pain is on her face.

3rd verse
She laughs again, she sees her man,
He's singing Daisy on a bike out in the rain.
He fades from sight, he's out of view,
and if I had the chance I'd bring him back to you.

Final refrain:
And she tells me we should go home down Brunswick Road
where we would walk and we would talk till the moon went down.
We were arm in arm, as in days of old.
We thought the street was paved with gold down Brunswick Road.
