Spyware Blaster is a program you run before you go online and then exit, it protects the PC from getting the gremlins in the firstplace.
Zone Alarm is a firewall that stop hackers and hacker programs from sneaking into/onto your PC and is an absolute must, you install it, put it on learn mode for the first session or so and then step up the security, it will ask if a program is legit and if you have just opened a program which you know needs internet access, like your e-mail program or something which updates from the net, then you give it permission and click the box that allows zone alarm to recognise it next time etc.,
Mailwasher is a program you configure to check your mailboxes before you load your e-mails into your e-mail program - you need to copy the settings for each e-mail account into mailwasher for it to know how to get into the account - there are some auto configuration settings which may help.
Adaware is a program which you run every time you go offline to pick up the gremlins various websites and the odd e-mail may have snuck onto your machine underneath what you thought you were doing.
Each of these programs can be configured to update themselves and need updating one way or another every day or week depending on your usage - I update Vet-AntiVirus everyday and adaware and spyblaster every week or so, and I check zone alarm and mailwasher every couple of months to see if there is an upgrade or update.
